Grave Conceptualization

Morty the Mataodor recounts Morty's epic adventure to save his beloved from the underworld; told with the Mexican "Dia de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead) theme in mind. To depict this journey, the art and specifically the background needed to reflect this.

Let's start by taking a look at a screenshot of the game's early prototype. This will serve as the basis for filling out the parts of our background. The game's point of view and the play area were already discussed at this point so we just needed to fill the space with art.

Since this is a journey to the underworld, we needed backgrounds that are designed to slowly transition from an initial background then end up in the underworld. Graveyards are usually depicted as entrances to the underworld, so we decided to use that as the initial background. For the underworld, it was designed to be ruled by a bull god. With that in mind, why not make the underworld stage an arena?

Adjustments were made after the mockups received feedback. One of which was to segment the backgrounds into manageable blocks. The graveyard segments will be slowly replaced by the underworld segments to represent the trip. There was also a request to change the graveyard's mood to a more... lively one to reflect the festive feeling of "Dia de los Muertos".

Well, that is all for today. Stay tuned for more updates^^.
